Children's Bedrooms
A child’s room is an important space which allows the child to develop their creativity and individuality. It is also one of the places which parents can enjoy decorating when they are expecting a baby, or redecorating once their child has grown older. A colourful and imaginative bedroom can foster an interest in learning and can instil from an early age important shapes, letters, numbers, and images.
For boys, there are a number of classic designs which have remained popular for decades. Space exploration, for example, can be used as a theme – with duvet covers and curtains available in planet and rocket fabrics, and wallpapers and mobiles with similar space-orientated themes. Dinosaurs are also fantastic for the slightly older boy, and can help them to learn how to identify the differences between particular dinosaurs and other animals. Zoo themes have in the past been popular and are still favoured by parents with young children, though in recent years robots and Disney characters may have replaced the zoo theme in the popularity stakes.
Girls rooms also have a number of classic themes, in particular involving princesses or fairies. Recently other fairytale creatures have become popular, such as unicorns. Rainbows, teddy bears and Barbie themes are also frequently used, while simpler floral themes can see the child through their youth and into their teen years.
If in doubt, simple colour schemes with minimal decoration can be the solution. Allowing your child to pick the colour of their room can be a great way to encourage them to stamp their personality on their room and to allow them to feel that they have participated in the decision-making process. If you’re game, you can even let them help with the decorating process – though always with adult supervision!
